Handmade pottery inspired by the natural beauty and creative spirit of the Hudson Valley
Caroline Waller is an artist and the owner and designer at Tivoli Tile Works. Founded in 1998 in the village of Tivoli, New York, the studio is now located in Saugerties, literally straight across the Hudson River.
Caroline's work is all handmade. Each piece is either hand-built or thrown on the wheel. All of the work is inspired by her natural surroundings, her community, and her travels: "I love that when I travel, the best way to really know the story of the place is to find the local potter. These traditions are ancient.”
Trained in sculpture and painting at both the University of Georgia and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Caroline's work is a synthesis of both these studies. The painterly quality to her work is immediately recognizable, and her cups are famous for their simple and sculptural beauty, as well as their signature handles.
"I'm so blessed to do what I do,” she says. “There is a meditative quality to working with earth that really suits me. I love the way the porcelain captures the light. It’s alluring like the quality of a Vermeer painting, rich and luscious and timely."
Functionality is important as well. “The cups are the first thing you pick up in the morning and the last thing you put down at night. My work is made to use daily, to serve with, to eat, drink and share, to wash with love!"
Caroline's work has appeared in the New York Times and Remodelista as well as other publications. Her work has been featured in events at the Met Breuer and The Cloisters. She collaborates with other artists regularly, and her work is collected by major artists and institutions.
